Elder Ministry​

Shepherding God's People with Wisdom and Faith

The Elder Ministry is a vital leadership ministry within the church, providing spiritual guidance, pastoral care, and support to the congregation. Elders are called to serve as mature believers who help nurture the spiritual growth of the church, uphold biblical teachings, and assist in fulfilling the church's mission. Through prayer, wisdom, and servant leadership, elders help strengthen the church and encourage believers in their walk with Christ.

What Is an Elder?

According to the Presbyterian Church's Book of Order, a person wanting to enter into the ministry of Elder is defined as a "...persons of wisdom and maturity of faith, having demonstrated skills in leadership and being compassionate in spirit... chosen by the congregation to discern and measure its fidelity to the Word of God, and to strengthen and nurture its faith and life... Ruling elders, together with ministers of the Word and Sacrament, exercise leadership, government, spiritual discernment, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as well as the whole church, including ecumenical relationships... they shall serve faithfully as members of the session. When elected as commissioners to higher councils, ruling elders participate and vote with the same authority as ministers of the Word and Sacrament, and they are eligible for any office."

​Elders work alongside the pastor and church leadership to provide guidance, encouragement, and oversight for the congregation. They are called to exemplify Christian character and lead by example through their faith, service, and commitment to God's Word. Elders play an important role in helping the church remain focused on spiritual growth, unity, and biblical truth.

 

Responsibilities of an Elder

Our elders serve by:

• Providing spiritual guidance and encouragement to church members

• Supporting the pastor and church leadership

• Praying for the congregation and ministry needs

• Promoting biblical teaching and sound doctrine

• Assisting with pastoral care and visitation

• Encouraging spiritual growth and discipleship

• Helping maintain unity and harmony within the church

• Offering wisdom and counsel during important church decisions

• Supporting ministry programs and outreach efforts

• Serving as examples of Christian faith and leadership

 

Qualifications of an Elder

Elders are expected to demonstrate:

• A strong and mature Christian faith

• Integrity, honesty, and godly character

• Commitment to prayer and Bible study

• Spiritual wisdom and discernment

• Humility and a servant's heart

• Leadership and mentoring abilities

• Dependability and faithfulness

• Love and compassion for God's people
